A Printer is primarily for the reproduction or a hard copy of documents stored in electronic form usually on physical print media such as paper or transparencies. Most printers are used as local computer peripherals, and are attached by a cable to a computer which serves as a document source. Network printers have built in network interfaces (typically wireless or Ethernet) and can serve as a hard copy device for any number of users on the network. Many modern printers can interface to electronic media such as memory sticks/cards, digital cameras and scanners. Some printers come combined with scanners and fax machines all in one single unit. Printers that include non-printing features are sometimes called Multifunction Printers (MFP) or Multi-Function Devices (MFD). A printer that is combined with a scanner can function as a kind of photocopier. Most MFPs include printing, scanning, fax machine, telephone and copying among their features. The most common type of printer is the Toner based printers that work using the Xerographic principle that is at work in most photocopiers and the most common type of toner based printer is the laser printer. Laser printers are known for producing high quality prints, they have a good print speed and a low cost per copy, and this is why they are mostly used in office applications. Laser printers are available in both color and monochrome varieties. A monochrome printer can only print an image that consists of one colour, usually black. They may also be able to print various tones of that colour such as grey scale. A full colour printer can print images of multiple colours and a photo printer can produce images that mimic the colour range and resolution of a photographic picture.
