Fax Machines InfoThe word Fax is short for facsimile from Latin fac simile, "make similar", i.e. "make a copy" and is a telecommunications technology used to transfer copies of documents over a telephone network. The word Telefax is short for Telefacsimilie and means “make a copy at a distance”, this device is also known as a Telecopier in some industries. If you want to send documents to people that are far away, faxes have the distinct advantage over delivered mail in that the delivery is instantaneous. A fax machine consists of an image scanner, a printer, a modem and sometimes a phone all in one unit. The scanner converts the content on a document into a digital image; the modem send the data through a phone line to the desired device and the printer at the other end prints a copy of the document. Some fax machines can be set up with a computer and the individual components; the scanner, printer, and occasionally the modem, can be used independently. These devices are called multifunction printers (MFP). Devices for transmitting printed documents electrically have existed since the mid to late 19th century, the modern fax machines became popular from the 1070’s onwards as the technology advanced and the cost of production dropped. Digital fax machines first became popular in Japan where they had a clear advantage over competing technologies like the teleprinter, since at the time it was faster to handwrite kanji than to type it, by the mid 1980’s fax machines were popular around the globe. Many businesses are turning to internet based systems to send and receive information and documents but many still maintain some kind of fax capacity. In many corporate environments, standalone fax machines have been replaced by "fax servers" and other computerized systems capable of receiving and storing incoming faxes electronically, and then routing them to users on paper or via secure email. Such systems have the advantage of reducing costs by eliminating unnecessary printouts and reducing the number of phone lines needed by an office.Back to Search Results | |||||||||
